Crockett / Gateway Elementary School
Borger Independent School District
119,800 SF
PSC was hired by Borger ISD to assist in combining two elementary schools into one campus. The challenge was to combine classrooms and common use areas for best use for all students and teachers.
The plan was designed into an "H" shape plan. The south wing includes first and second grade classrooms, administration offices, reading recovery, resource room, science room, and special education rooms. The central common use areas were planned to allow the best access for all education wings. The central common use area included the library, cafeteria, kitchen, speech classrooms, music rooms, computer labs, gym, teachers' lounge, and teachers' workroom. The north wing includes third and fourth grade classrooms, resource rooms, science room, and a learning lab.
It is also the first “green” school in the region and is currently being submitted for LEED® certification, sanctioned by the US Green Building Council. Borger ISD took a common sense approach to green design, focusing on water savings and energy efficiency. Our process included life cycle costing of mechanical systems to help their decision process. The result is a building that will save over 100,000 gallons of water a year and 19 percent of the electricity that a conventional school building would consume.
The site layout includes a bus drop-off lane for both sides of the school that is isolated from the staff parking, parent drop-off, and visitor parking. Other site amenities included a large playground area, baseball field, and a greenhouse. The elementary school complex was designed to mesh with an existing junior high school, a track, and soccer / football field.
